Psst...Wanna Go to Seminary?
Better read this: excellent advice from a priest who has been is there.
Unlike, Ben, I think I have a little more nostalgia and warm feelings for my seminary experience! :)
I would argue that, as much as possible, it is absolutely necessary for future priests to be seminary graduates. The experience of enduring three years of seminary is far better preparation for serving in a parish than "reading for orders" and never leaving one's home parish.
Dear Father, the emphasis was on some parishes, which, God be merciful, you will be spared. Some of our (Antiochian) parishes are wonderful places to be, and one would never wish to leave. Others....
My advice? Don't go, unless you absolutely have to ... !

I should have gone to Holy Cross! No, really, I have nostalgia and warm feelings for SVS as well. I'm just glad to be free!
ReplyDeleteFr. Matthew, you should have to survive in some of our parishes. They're not only preparation for ministry but a form of perpetual martyrdom. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I did get to serve in three different parishes during the course of my seminary experience. Is that preparation enough?
