New Bishops

H.G.Alexios Mar Eusebius

No, not those bishops; there are plenty of places to lose your Lenten peace over that.

On March 2, the Malankara Orthodox Church (Indian non-Chalcedonian Orthodox under the Catholicos Didymus I) appointed two new bishops for North America: H.G. Zacharia Mar Nicolavos is appointed Assistant Metropolitan attached to the North East Diocese of America, and H.G. Alexios Mar Eusebius is Metropolitan of the Diocese of South West America.

Many other dioceses were also created.

Many years to all.

There is an Oriental Orthodox Church near to where I live and happening to drop in on a Sunday afternoon. I just missed meeting their Bishop who earlier that day had made an Episcopal visit. I was somewhat surprised to learn that he spent most of his time "on the road" throughout the better part of North America visiting parishes and having no car frequently traveled by bus and stayed at clergy or parishioners homes. The church itself was in the countryside and was an old wood structure to which the men of the parish had added an addition as they had run out of room with the growing numbers. The priest and his family lived behind the church and visiting them they showed me their vegetable garden which with their meager means they supplemented their diet. Even in the afternoon there were people in the church praying many of whom had traveled a long distance, many were children. I asked what other days were their services at the church and I was told "every day" and given a schedule. I was told that it was open every day and if I wanted to come to come and if for some reason the doors were locked I would go to the rectory and ask for the keys. Quite the contrast don't you think?

Hi, Reader Polycarp. Thanks for sharing this story. It certainly says a great deal about the faith, devotion, and sacrifice they have made for God. Would that we were as faithful -- something for which to strive during Lent.

Thanks again, and God bless.
